PROIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated BIG EAST foe Villanova, 3-1, on Friday, Sept. 23 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. Villanova drops to 1-8 (2-0 BIG EAST). The Friars have posted a perfect 4-0 mark on Lennon Family Field this season as well.
The Friars got on the board to take a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute as senior midfielder Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario) recorded her team-best seventh goal of the season. She found the back of the cage during a penalty corner as she tipped in a feed from freshman Floor Rozemeijer (Santpoort-Zuid, Holland). Rozemeijer was credited with the assist.
The Wildcats tied the game, 1-1, in the 26th minute as Megan Vermeil collected a loose ball off a rebound and knocked it into the cage. The two teams were deadlocked in a 1-1 tie at the halftime break.
Providence got the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner from Houle in the 60th minute as she tipped in another ball on a penalty corner, marking her eight goal of the year. Junior Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.) added an insurance goal in the 67th minute as she touched the ball into the cage on a corner. Junior defender Abby Thornton (West Pittston, Pa.) was awarded assists on both goals.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) collected five saves in the victory for Providence, while her counterpart, Erika Miller, registered six saves.
Providence out-shot Villanova, 11-9, and held a 14-7 advantage in penalty corners.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, Sept. 25 against non-conference foe UMass Lowell. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I., and is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
