The seventh-seeded Friars will travel to Burlington, Vt. to match up against the second-seeded University of Vermont Catamounts in the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Saturday, February 26. Puck drop is set for 12 p.m.
Scouting the Friars
The Friars concluded the regular season 15-13-6 overall and 12-12-3 in Hockey East play.
Most recently, Providence defeated no. 10 seeded Holy Cross University in the Opening Round of the Hockey East Tournament on February 23 at Schneider Arena.
Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) put in the first goal for the Friars and was followed with goals from
Ashley Clark (North Weymouth, Mass.) and
KC Brooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to secure a 3-1 win.
Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario) assisted on all three goals for a team-high three points on the night.
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) put up 22 saves to keep the Crusaders off the board after their first period goal.
Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) leads the charge offensively for the Friars with 20 points on the season from seven goals and a team-leading 13 assists. She is followed closely by
Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) who has recorded 19 points through nine goals and 10 assists.
Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) has a team-high 11 goals on the season. Defensively, sophomore
Claire Tyo (Massena, N.Y.) leads the team in blocks, with 57. She is followed by
Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) who has recorded 55 blocks. DeBlois has also made an extensive contribution offensively, putting up 10 assists.
Abstreiter has made 26 starts in net. She holds a .947 save percentage and a 1.68 goals against average. The netminder has made 779 total saves and has 3 shutouts.
Regular Season vs. Vermont
The teams have met three times during the season, with Vermont holding a 2-1-0 lead over the Friars heading into the matchup. The Friars defeated the Catamounts at home on Dec. 31, 3-1, before Vermont claimed two wins over the Friars, 3-1 and 4-1, on Jan. 21 and Jan. 22 in Burlington.
Providence in the Hockey East Tournament
Providence has made 20 total appearances in the Hockey East Quarterfinal round. The Friars have a 9-11 record in those appearances. The team's overall playoff record in Hockey East is 20-21. Last season, they were the no. 3 seed and fell to first-ranked Northeastern in the Championship. Providence has won three Hockey East titles. The team hoisted the Bertagna Trophy in 2003, 2004 and 2005. These were the first three Hockey East Championships in the history of the league.

Vermont has made 17 total appearances in the Hockey East Quarterfinal round. The Catamounts have a 4-13 record in those appearances. The team's overall playoff record in Hockey East is 4-15.
Meeting of PC and Vermont
The Friars and Black Bears have met in one Hockey East Tournament game, the last being the Quarterfinal Round in 2017 when Vermont recorded a 2-1 win over Providence.

Sandra Abstreiter was named to the All-Hockey East Second Team, as announced by the conference on Friday, Feb. 25. Abstreiter has made 26 starts in net this season for the Friars. She holds a .947 save percentage and a 1.68 goals against average. The netminder has made 779 total saves and has 3 shutouts. She was recently announced as a semifinalist for the Women's Hockey Goalie of the Year Award.
Scouting the Catamounts
The Catamounts finished the regular season with a 21-10-3 overall record and a 18-7-2 mark in Hockey East (second place). Most recently, Vermont defeated Boston College, 4-2 in the final game of the 2021-22 regular season. This will be the team's fourth match-up of the 2021-22 season. As a team, the Catamounts average 3.0 goals per game and allow just 2.1. The Catamounts convert on 18.5% of power plays and kill off 91.8% of penalties.
Who to Watch
Senior Theresa Schafzahl leads the Catamounts offensively with 43 total points off 23 goals and 20 assists. Maude Poulin-Labelle and Kristina Shanahan follow, with 34 and 33 points, respectively. In net, sophomore Jessie McPherson has played the majority of time between the pipes, recording a 1.97 goals against average and a .917 save percentage through 22 games played.
