PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- UMass-Amherst defeated Providence College, 1-0, in field hockey action at Providence, R.I., on Wednesday, October 11. UMass earned the win in a strokeoff after the two teams were scoreless after 70 minutes of regulation play and 30 minutes of overtime.
In the first series of strokes, the five UMass players and the five Providence players were not able to score. However in the second series of strokes, UMass' first three players, Kristen Schmidt, Lucy Koch and Patty Robinson scored and the Friars were not able to put a shot past Minuteman goalkeeper Zowie Tucker and UMass earned the win.
Tucker recorded six stops in the game for UMass. Friar goalkeepers Heather Tattersall and Meaghan Moran shared the goaltending duties for PC. Tattersall registered six stops in the contest.
With the win, UMass improved to 10-3 overall, while Providence fell to 4-11 overall.
Providence College returns to action on Saturday, October 14 against Boston University at 1:00 p.m. at PC's Hendricken Field.
