PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Villanova defeated Providence College, 3-1, in BIG EAST field hockey action on Saturday, October 7 at Providence, R.I. Villanova junior Stephanie Vrettos (West Long Branch, N.J.) tallied a hat trick to lead the Wildcats to their seventh win of the season.
Vrettos put Villanova on the scoreboard at 21:56 of the first half. She added her second goal with 7:56 remaining in the first half to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Senior Breanne Wojnarowicz (Holden, Mass.) scored the Friars' only goal with 30:10 remaining in the game to cut the lead to 2-1. However, Vrettos registered her third goal of the contest with 1:57 remaining to seal the win for Villanova.
Sophomore Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) recorded seven stops in net for Villanova. Providence senior goaltender Heather Tattersall (Bethlehem, N.H.) made eight saves in the loss.
With the win, Villanova improved to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST action, while Providence fell to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, October 11 against UMass-Amherst at PC's Glay Field at 3:00 p.m.
