Friars Split With Yale In Home Opener

Providence, R.I.- The Providence College softball team split two games with Yale University in their 2000 home opener, winning the first game, 3-0, while dropping the second game, 2-1, this afternoon at Providence, R.I.

In the opening game versus the Bulldogs, the Friars scored all three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior righthander Robyn West pitched a strong seven innings, giving up one run and four hits to get her fourth win of the year. Yale's Teri Hickey fell to 2-3 on the season, giving up nine hits and one earned run.

Offensively, the Friars got started when Sarah Morin hit a double to right centerfield. Lynnette Rosa then brought Morin in when she singled to left center. Bonnie Skrenta reached first on an error and advanced Rosa to third, setting up Gwyn Mangini to record on RBI on Rosa's score. Nicole Nelson then rounded out the PC offensive effort with a double down the left field line, bringing Skrenta home.

Yale attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh as Jess Bartholomew brought Laura Beckert in with a single RBI with two outs but got no further than that.

In game two, PC's Heather Nathan dropped to 1-3 on the mound, giving up five hits and two runs in seven innings. Kristen Gengaro pitched six innings for the Bulldogs, fanning four batters for the game, while Mariah Fike completed the game, striking out two batters in the seventh.

Yale scored both of their runs in the first inning as Kristen Maturo hit a two-run RBI double with two outs. PC scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth, with Amber Carr hitting a RBI double to centerfield to allow pinch runner Kerri Palamara to score. The Friars then made a last-effort attempt in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but Fike struck out Missy Peterson to seal the win for Yale.

Providence returns to action on Tuesday, March 28, when they travel to Fairfield, CT, to take on the Stags of Fairfield University. Game time for the doubleheader is slated for 2:00 p.m.
