Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

The Providence College softball team got strong pitching performances from Robyn West and Heather Nathan as the Friars defeated Indiana State, 6-3, and Austin Peay, 6-2, at the Rebel Games in Ocoee, Fla., this afternoon.
In the first game against Indiana State, West struck out one batter to improve her record to 2-1 on the year. In the second game, Nathan gave up six hits and struck out five batters from Austin Peay in her first appearance on the mound this season.
The Sycamores' Cassie Reeser took the loss in game one, giving five runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. Cathy Yamashiro closed the game for Indiana State, fanning two batters in 2.2 innings on the mound. Game two saw Megan Lane go the distance for the Lady Govs, giving up six runs on six hits to fall to 1-6 on the season.
Providence scored in the bottom of the first inning of game one as Gwyn Mangini crossed home plate off a wild pitch. Indiana State came back in the second inning to tie the game as Melanie Newnum also scored on a wild pitch.
PC added three more runs in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by Sarah Morin, who was 2-for-3 in the game, and Mangini and Morin scoring on errors. Ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, PC sealed the win with Mangini sending Kerri Palamara home with two outs on the Friars.
In game two, the Friars got all two of their runs off Amber Carr's two run homer in the top of the third inning. PC got on the board again with runs in the fourth and fifth innings from Lynnette Rosa and Nathan. Nathan hit a RBI double in the top of the seventh to put PC up, 5-2, and then scored on a passed ball to complete the offensive effort for Providence.
Providence is now 4-2 overall and return to action tomorrow, March 10, when they take on Robert Morris College at 4:20 p.m. and Bethune-Cookman for a 6:10 p.m. game.
