Providence's Peterson Named ECAC Pitcher of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College freshman Melissa Peterson (Santa Ana, Calif.) was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 17, 2000, the ECAC Office announced today.

The freshman pitcher won four of the six games she started last week for the Friars to earn this award for the second time this year. Peterson allowed just eight earned runs and recorded 29 strikeouts in 41 innings of work during the week. In a big win over Hartford, she pitched 7 innings, struck out four batters and allowed no earned runs.

The rookie right-hander first won the award on April 11, after winning five of the seven games she started for the Friars. Peterson allowed just eight earned runs and recorded 32 strikeouts in 43 innings of work during the week. In a double header against Sacred Heart, she pitched 14 innings, struck out six batters and allowed no earned runs.

For the season, Peterson owns a 1.81 earned run average with a 11-9 record on the mound. She has struck out 94 batters in 135.2 innings of work.

The Friars are currently 18-20 overall and 3-53 in the BIG EAST. PC returns to action on Thursday, April 20, when they host Boston College to resume game two of their doubleheader at 11:00 a.m.
