Providence, R.I.- The Providence College softball team lost both games of today's doubleheader with Rutgers University, 9-0 and 5-1 (nine innings).
In game one, Rutgers' Kelly Crosson started things off with a two-run homer in the top of the third inning. The Scarlet Knights got on the board again in the fifth, with RBIs singles from Debbie DeJong and Crosson. They then scored five runs in the seventh, led by Jen Jacoby's two RBI single to left field.
PC's Melissa Peterson (Santa Ana, Calif.) fell to 12-13 on the mound, giving up just two earned runs while striking out seven batters in 6.1 innings of work. Megan Wargin closed out the game for the Friars. Rutgers' Leah Black picked up her 15th win of the season, giving up three hits and fanning eight batters
The Scarlet Knights were also first to score in game two, as DeJong scored on a throwing error in the top of the first. The Friars tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of one with Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) knocking a RBI single to left center to bring in Jami Servidone (Rensselaer, N.Y.). Rutgers finally broke the tie in the top of the ninth inning, capped off by Danielle Dolbow's two RBI double down the left field line.
Black improved to 15-7 on the year, giving up only three hits in nine innings of work. PC's Robyn West (Ganesvoort, N.Y.) fell to 4-6, allowing eight hits in 8. 2 innings, while Wargin closed out game two as well.
After today's game, Providence falls to 20-25 overall and 3-11 in the BIG EAST, while Rutgers improves to 24-14-1 overall and 6-6 in BIG EAST action.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, April 30, when they host the Wildcats of Villanova University. Game time for the doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m.
