SYRACUSE, N.Y.--Junior rightfielder Missy Bieman hit the first home run in Syracuse University program history, a two-run, sixth-inning shot over the centerfield fence, that helped the Orangewomen to a 4-0 victory over Providence on April 8. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called because of rain.

Freshman pitcher Tara DiMaggio tossed a complete-game two-hitter and struck out seven Friar hitters. Freshman Missy Peterson (Santa Ana, Calif.) fell to 7-6 on the mound, giving up nine hits and three earned runs.

Syracuse scored the only run it needed in the second inning. Freshman third baseman Jackie Herrman led off the frame with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Becky Snyder, a sophomore. After Bieman flied out to left, freshman first baseman Leah Hansen singled to second. Both players advanced on a throwing error by Friar second baseman Gwyn Mangini (Ganesvoort, N.Y.). Junior catcher Chrissy Inman followed with a sacrifice bunt that scored Snyder.

Syracuse upped the score to 2-0 after another Mangini error in the sixth and Bieman contributed her historic home run in the next at bat.

Freshman leftfielder Kristen Collins joined Herrman with two hits each.

Providence returns to action on Tuesday, April 11 at Holy Cross for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
