Providence, R.I.-- The Providence College Field Hockey team was defeated by Brown University, 4-1, on Wednesday, September 12.
After 16 minutes of dominantly midfield play, Brown broke the scoreless tie when Cara Gardner dribbled into the circle and found the back of the net. Three minutes later, Hyun-Joo Park added a second goal for the Bears when she scored off of a rebound that was shot by Gardner to give Brown a 2-0 lead at the half.
With 23:20 remaining in the second half, Gardner scored her second goal of the game on a redirection from a pass by Susana Garcia in the midfield. At the 15 minute mark, Stacey Lafond had a breakaway for the Bears and drew a penalty stroke from Providence senior goalie Heather Tattersall (Bethlehem, N.H.), who got called on the play for trying to take out the person rather than the ball. Megan Patterson netted the stroke to give Brown a 4-0 lead.
Providence freshman Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.) scored the lone goal for the Friars with 9:21 remaining when she drive the ball into the corner of the net from the top of the circle.
Tattersall (Bethlehem, N.H.) made seven saves for the Friars. Annie Owens recorded four saves between the pipes for the Bears.
Brown improved to 2-0 overall, while Providence fell to 0-6 overall.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, September 16, when they take on the Michigan State University. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Northeastern University.
