PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College defeated Rutgers University, 2-0, in BIG EAST field hockey action on Saturday, September 30 at Providence, R.I.
Senior Breanne Wojnarowicz (Holden, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal off a penalty corner with 10:30 remaining in the first half. The Friars continued their strong play in the first half, outshooting the Scarlet Knights, 6-2, in the first 35 minutes of action.
The Friars increased their lead to 2-0 with 25:20 remaining in the game when junior Maggie Hoffmann (Southbury, Conn.) scored her first career goal.
Providence senior goaltender Heather Tattersall (Bethlehem, N.H.) played strong in net for PC, making five saves and earning her third shutout of the season. Senior goalkeper Abby Joseph (Linwood, N.J.) registered five stops for the Scarlet Knights.
With the win, Providence College improved to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST action, while Rutgers fell to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.
The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, October 4 against Yale at PC's Glay Field at 3:30 p.m.
