WORCESTER, Mass. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Holy Cross 14-8 in the Friar's season opener on Tuesday afternoon in Worcester, Mass.
Providence (0-1) was able to get on the scoreboard first as Tom McLoughlin connected on one of Kyle Ojakian's team-leading three assists. The lead did not last however, as Holy Cross went on to score nine-straight goals to take a commanding 9-1 lead through the 9:10 mark of the second quarter. The Friars responded by scoring four-consecutive goals, but it wasn't enough to take over the lead. The difference in the game proved to be the 7-1 run made by the Crusaders in the second period alone.
PC's Skip Dunphy led the Friars with three goals on the day and Cameron Roller followed with two. Jim Dooley, Chris Houston and Tom McLoughlin added one goal each in the loss.
In goal, Paul Doran played 59 minutes and 30 seconds and allowed all 14 Crusader goals while stopping 10 shots. He was replaced by Brian Jordan (0 saves, 0 goals against). Brian Hodgdon notched 12 saves for Holy Cross to secure the win.
Providence will travel to Harvard on Saturday, March 20 for it's next game. The contest is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
