Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Denver On Senior Day, 8-7, In Overtime To Clinch BIG EAST Tournament Berth

Richie Joseph scored the game-winning goal in overtime.
Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated the University of Denver on its Senior Day, 8-7, in overtime on Saturday, April 18, in Providence, R.I. Providence improved to 6-8 on the season and 2-2 in BIG EAST play, while Denver fell to 5-7 and 1-3 in BIG EAST play. Providence also clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship with one regular-season game remaining on the schedule. Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored a hat-trick, including the game-winning goal in overtime. Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) recorded five points on two goals and three assists.
1st Quarter:
• Denver scored the game's first goal at the 8:04 mark in the first quarter and held a 1-0 advantage.
• Joseph responded with his first goal of the day, tying the game at 1-1 (4:14).
2nd Quarter:
• Chambers scored early in the second quarter and gave the Friars their first lead of the game at 2-1 (13:33).
• The teams continued to trade goals as Denver tied the game at 2-2 (5:08).
• Joseph closed the half with a goal on an assist from Chambers to give the Friars a 3-2 advantage at the break (2:40).
• Denver goalkeeper Danny Manning tallied 10 saves in the first half.
• Providence outshot Denver 17-10 in the first half.
3rd Quarter:
• Denver scored first in the second half and tied the game at 3-3 (9:48).
• The Friars responded with a 3-0 scoring run. Luke Schmitt (Garden City, N.Y.) scored first, followed by Chambers and Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.), giving Providence its largest lead of the game at 6-3 (4:46).
• The Pioneers answered with a goal that cut the deficit to two, but Chambers followed with his second goal of the game and gave the Friars a 7-4 advantage (2:08).
4th Quarter
• The Pioneers outscored the Friars, 3-0, in the final quarter of regulation. Joe Taraboletti scored back-to-back goals, and Marek Tzagournis tied the game at seven with his second goal of the day (3:18).
• Providence had the last shot of regulation but was stopped as Denver forced overtime.
Overtime
• Denver controlled the opening draw in overtime. Providence forced a stop with a shot clock violation.
• Joseph scored the game-winning goal for Providence on a feed from Schmitt with 1:52 to play in overtime.
