PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Quinnipiac University, 12-3, on Wednesday, March 18 in Providence, R.I. With the win, Providence improved to 4-5 on the season, while Quinnipiac fell to 1-7.
Matt Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.) paced Providence's offense with five points on three goals and two assists.
Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ont.) made 12 saves and allowed just three goals for a career-best .800 save percentage.
1st Quarter:
• Quinnipiac opened the scoring for a 1-0 lead (9:20).
•
Parker Kennedy (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) responded with a goal for the Friars and tied the game at one.
•
Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.) scored on a fast break off the ensuing faceoff and gave Providence a 2-1 lead (6:36).
2nd Quarter:
• Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) and Lazzaro scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter. It capped a 4-0 Providence scoring run (9:39).
• The Bobcats responded with a goal that ended the Friars' run and cut the deficit to two (6:12).
• The Friars responded with another 4-0 scoring run and took an 8-2 lead.
Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) and
Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) scored the first two goals and
Jack Bonello (Great Falls, Va.) and Lazzaro capped the run before the end of the first half.
• Bonello tallied two assists in the first half.
• Providence outshot Quinnipiac 23-21 in the first two quarters.
3rd Quarter:
•
Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) opened the half for the Friars with a quick goal that extended Providence's lead to 9-2 (14:17).

Luke Schmitt (Garden City, N.J.) and Kennedy scored back-to-back goals that extended Providence's scoring run to 7-0. The run spanned over 10 minutes as the Friars jumped out to an 11-2 lead (12:56).
• Quinnipiac scored to end the Friars' run (5:04).
• Providence led 11-3 at the intermission.
4th Quarter
•
Chris Matia scored the lone goal in the fourth quarter as Providence held a 12-3 lead at the final horn.
• Providence outscored Quinnipiac 4-1 in the second half.
Notes:
• Lazzaro scored a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. It marked his third hat-trick of the season. Lazzaro ranks second on the team in points (27), goals (16) and assists (11).
• Kennedy scored a season-high two goals for the Friars.
• Bonello tallied three points on one goal and two assists.
• Providence's 12 goals came from nine different scorers.
• Olenik, a long-stick midfielder, continued to establish himself as a dual threat with three ground balls and his third goal of the season.
• Sterritt made 12 saves with only three goals allowed for a career-best .800 save percentage. Sterritt has registered a .590 or better save percentage in five of Providence's nine games.
• Joseph recorded a career-high five ground balls.
• Joseph currently ranks 14th on the Friars' all-time scoring list and fourth on the all-time goals list. The senior owns 143 career points on 107 goals and 36 assists.
• Seven of the Friars' 12 goals were assisted.
•
Jack Cooper (East Hampton, N.Y.) went 8-11 from the face-off 'X' as Providence won 10-of-18 opportunities.

Chris Esposito (Gloucester, Mass.) recorded a season-high three caused turnovers.
• Providence outshot Quinnipiac by a margin of 48-34.
