Men’s Lacrosse Defeats St. John’s, 18-10, To Clinch The No. 2 Seed In The BIG EAST Tournament

Richie Joseph and Rhett Chambers each tallied seven points and combined for 10 of the Friars’ 18 goals.


Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated St. John's University, 18-10, on Friday, April 24, at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y. Providence improved to 7-8 on the season and 3-2 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's fell to 2-12 (0-5 BIG EAST). Providence clinched the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship and will play No. 3-seed Villanova in the semifinals on April 30. Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded seven points on six goals and one assist. Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) tallied seven points on four goals and three assists.
 
1st Quarter:
• The Friars opened the game with back-to-back goals. Chambers scored first, and Joseph followed to give Providence a 2-0 lead (9:58).
• St. John's responded with back-to-back goals and tied the game, 2-2.
• Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) answered with a quick goal and gave Providence a 3-2 lead (3:29). The Red Storm tied the game at three in the next possession (3:06).
• The Friars closed the quarter with back-to-back goals scored by Brady Garcia (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Chambers. The goal marked Chambers' 100th career point.  
• The goals by Garcia and Chambers were scored in a span of 10 seconds and came with 16-seconds and six-seconds left in the quarter, respectively.
• Providence held a 5-3 lead at the break.
 
2nd Quarter:
• St. John's struck first in the second quarter and cut the Friars' deficit to one at 5-4 (13:20).
• Providence responded with three straight goals. Chambers scored his third goal of the game, and Joseph followed with his second. Matt Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.) capped the run as Providence led 8-4 (7:09).
• St. John's ended Providence's run with a goal that narrowed the deficit to 8-5 (5:20).
• Luke Schmitt (Carden City, N.J.) answered with a goal on an assist from Chambers (3:45). 
• The Red Storm scored with 17 seconds remaining in the half as Providence took a 9-6 lead into the break.
 
3rd Quarter:
• Garcia opened the second half with his second goal of the game and gave Providence a 10-6 lead (10:26).
• St. John's found the back of the net to make it a 10-7 game (9:48).
• Providence closed the quarter with three unanswered goals. Joseph scored back-to-back goals, and Chambers capped the run with his fourth goal of the game as Providence led 13-7 with 54 seconds remaining in the quarter.
 
4th Quarter
• Joseph extended the Friars' run to four-straight goals and gave Providence a 14-7 lead (13:18).
• Noah Plenn scored his fourth goal for St. John's as Providence held a 10-7 lead (9:48).
Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) responded with a Providence goal and pushed the lead back out to seven. Chase Huggard scored back-to-back goals for St. John's and cut the Providence lead to 15-10 (9:42).
• Providence scored three straight goals to close the game. Joseph added his sixth goal of the contest, followed by Tyler Flynn (Setauket, N.Y.). 
Matt Hayes (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored his first career goal as Providence led 18-10 at the final horn.
 
Notes:
• Joseph posted a season-high seven points on six goals and one assist. The senior's six goals also marked a season-high. Joseph leads Providence in goals this season (34) and has tallied six hat-tricks.
• Joseph owns 165 career points on 124 goals and 41 assists. He ranks fifth on Providence's all-time points list and third on the all-time goals list.
• Chambers tallied seven points on four goals and three assists. It marked the junior's seventh hat-trick and fifth game with three-or-more assists this season.
• Chambers' second goal marked his 100th career point. He owns 105 career points on 58 goals and 47 assists. Chambers leads Providence's offense with 65 points this season. He needs just one more point to match Ryan Bell's single-season points record (66). Bell scored a program-best 66 points in back-to-back seasons (2024 and 2025).
• Lazzaro recorded three points on one goal and two assists for Providence. Garcia added two goals.
• Chris Esposito (Gloucester, Mass.) won 12-of-21 faceoffs for a .571 win percentage. He added seven ground balls.
• Dean Metzger (Garden City South, N.Y.) recorded two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
• Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ont.) made 10 saves on a .474 save percentage.
• Providence's 18 goals mark the most goals by the Friars in a BIG EAST Conference game since 2022. That season, Providence defeated St. John's 20-14 in the regular-season finale.
• With the win, Providence clinched the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Championships. The Friars will play the No. 3 seed Villanova.
• Providence outshot St. John's, 42-37.
• Providence went a perfect 18-18 on clears.
 
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars will host the 2026 BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The semifinals are set for Thursday, April 30. Providence enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed and will play No. 3 seed Villanova at 7:30 p.m. No. 1-seed Georgetown and No. 4-seed Denver will play in the first semifinal of the evening, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Both semifinal games will be broadcast on ESPN+. The winner of each semifinal will advance to the BIG EAST Championship Game on Saturday, March 2 at 2:00 p.m. on ESPNU.
