Friars appeared in the BIG EAST Championship Game for the second time in program history.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 2-seed Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 1-seed Georgetown, 14-6, in the BIG EAST Championship Game on May 2 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. Providence, who appeared in the BIG EAST Championship Game for just the second time in program history, finished the season with an 8-9 record. Georgetown earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship and will learn its fate on Sunday evening during the NCAA Selection Show, scheduled for 9:30 p.m. The Hoyas improved to 10-4.
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars struck first to claim a 1-0 lead with 11:51 on the clock. Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.) was credited with the goal off a feed from Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.).
• The Hoyas tied the game with a transition goal converted by a pair of long-poles. Ty Banks scored the goal, while Charlie McGurrin recorded the assist.
• The score remained tied at the intermission, 1-1.
• Providence held a 10-7 edge in shots, while Georgetown held a slim advantage in shots on goal (4-3).
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence broke the stalemate just 29-seconds into the second quarter as Jay Wilkerson bounced a shot off the turf and by the Hoyas' goaltender, unassisted (2-1).
• Georgetown answered with four-consecutive goals to claim a 5-2 lead with 8:57 remaining in the quarter.
• Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) halted the Hoyas' scoring run with his first goal of the day (13th of the season) at the 8:26 mark. Matia was credited with his second assist of the day as the Friars made it a 5-3 game.
• The Hoyas responded with consecutive goals at 5:04 and 2:27 to go ahead 7-3.
• Georgetown carried its 7-3 lead into halftime after outscoring Providence 6-2 in the second quarter.
3RD QUARTER:
• Georgetown scored on an extra-man opportunity 29-seconds into the third. It marked the Hoyas' first EMO of the day and provided an 8-3 lead.
• Owen Finetto (Haworth, N.J.) caused a turnover and picked up a ground ball in the Friars' defensive end and raced the length of the field to cash in on an unassisted goal to get the Friars' within 8-4 (7:54).
• The Hoyas scored three goals in a span of 1:58 to take an 11-4 lead.
• Cam Mesh (Spencerport, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season after picking up a ground ball of a Chris Esposito face-off win and finding the back of the net with three-seconds left.
• The Hoyas led 11-5 at the intermission.
4TH QUARTER:
• Georgetown opened up an eight-goal lead (13-5) with a pair of goals at 13:33 and 11:25 to start the fourth.
• Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied his first goal of the game (and 39th of the season) with 10:12 left to play. He was assisted by Brazell (13-6).
• The Hoyas scored their 14th and final goal of the day with 5:24 on the clock to seal the win.
NOTES:
• Brazell and Matia finished the game with two points each on one goal and one assist.
• The Friars won the face-off battle, claiming wins in 14 of 23 opportunities. Esposito was 9-12, while Jack Cooper went 5-11 in the game.
• Brazell, Joseph and Chambers were named to the All-Tournament Team.
• Joseph finished the season with a team-best 39 goals and was second on the team in points (49).
• Joseph finished his career at Providence ranked fifth all-time in career scoring with 171 points on 129 goals and 42 assists. His 129 goals ranks second all-time at Providence.
• Chambers led the team with a single-season program record of 71 points on 35 goals and a team-best 36 assists.
• Chambers, a junior, now owns 111 career points on 60 goals and 51 assists. He moved into sole possession of 24th on the Friars' all-time scoring list and tied for 14th in career assists.
• Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ontario) finished the game in net with nine saves.
