Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Air Force, 18-17, In Overtime

Rhett Chambers paced the offense with 10 points on four goals and six assists.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by the Air Force Academy, 18-17, in overtime on Saturday, March 21, in Providence, R.I. With the loss, Providence fell to 4-6 on the season, while Air Force improved to 2-6. Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) matched his career high in points with 10 on four goals and six assists. Matt Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.) added a career-high six points on two goals and a career-best four assists. The Friars open BIG EAST Conference play next weekend at Marquette on Saturday, March 28 at 12:30 p.m. ET.

1st Quarter:
• Air Force took control of the game early and scored six straight goals while holding the Friars scoreless through 14 minutes of play in the first quarter.
• Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) got the Friars on the board, scoring with just two seconds left in the first quarter. Air Force led, 6-1.

2nd Quarter:
• Providence bounced back early in the second quarter, scoring three straight goals and extended its scoring run to 4-0. Jack Bonello (Great Falls, Va.) scored first on a feed from Chambers. Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.) and Lazzaro followed with back-to-back man-up goals. The Friars trailed, 6-4 (12:28).
• Over the next four minutes of action, the teams traded goals, each side tallying three. Chris Jaskiewicz (Winter Park, Fla.) scored two of the Friars' three goals in the stretch and helped cut the deficit to 9-7 (7:09).
• The Falcons closed the first half with back-to-back goals and took an 11-7 lead into the second half.
• Providence outshot Air Force, 15-14, in the first half.
 
3rd Quarter:
• Air Force scored first in the second half and extended its lead to 12-7 (12:59).
• The Friars responded with a 4-1 scoring run and cut the deficit to two. Chambers scored two of the team's four goals in the run, and Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) added his second goal of the day. Air Force led 13-11 (5:53).
• The Falcons responded with back-to-back goals and closed out the third quarter with a 15-11 lead.
 
4th Quarter
• Providence found a rhythm to start the fourth quarter, scoring three straight goals and cut the Falcons' lead to one.  Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) sparked the run, and Parker Kennedy (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) and Lazzaro capped it, each scoring their second goals of the day.  Air Force led 15-14 (7:42).
• Air Force once again found a response with back-to-back goals from Caelan Driggs. It marked Driggs' eighth goal of the game. The Falcons led, 17-14 (4:59).
• Down three with 3:30 left in regulation, Chambers scored his third goal of the game. Joseph followed with his third goal and cut Air Force's lead to one with a minute remaining.
• With just 17 seconds remaining, Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) scored the equalizing goal to tie the game at 17 and force overtime. It marked the first tie of the game since the opening face-off.
 
Overtime
• Air Force won the opening face-off of overtime and turned the ball over. On the next possession, Friars drew a penalty for a man-up opportunity, but failed to convert.
• On the third possession of overtime, Ben Heidt scored the game-winning goal for Air Force (18-17).
 
Notes:
• Chambers tied a career-high in points, registering 10 on four goals and six assists. Chambers has recorded five or more assists three times this season. It also marked Chambers' fourth hat-trick of the season.
• Chambers has now tallied 20 goals on the season, marking a new career-high. He leads the Friars offense with 45 points on 20 goals and 25 assists.
• Lazzaro registered a career-high six points on two goals and a career-best four assists.
• Joseph scored his three goals for the Friars. It marked his third hat-trick of the season. 
• Joseph is currently tied for 11th on the Friars' all-time scoring list and fifth on the all-time goals list. The senior owns 147 points on 110 goals and 37 assists in his career.
Chris Esposito (Gloucester, Mass.) won 21 of 32 face-offs for a .656 win percentage. Esposito's 21 face-off wins marked a career high. The junior also recorded a career-high 14 ground balls.
• Kennedy and Jaskiewicz each scored two goals for the Friars.
Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.) tallied four ground balls and one caused turnover for Providence.
• Caelan Driggs scored a game-high eight goals for Air Force. Ben Heidt scored four goals, including the Falcons' game-winning goal.
• Providence won 24 of 37 face-offs.
• The Friars outshot Air Force, 45-37, in the game.
• Providence picked up 37 ground balls to Air Force's 28.

WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars will open BIG EAST play on Saturday, March 28, against Marquette. Opening face-off is set for 12:30 p.m. (ET) at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis., and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
