Providence Lacrosse Picks Up First Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence men's lacrosse team won its first game of the 2001 season on Tuesday, March 20 at Glay Field on the campus of Providence College. The Friars defeated Wagner College 14-2, behind the strong effort of senior, attack Jim Dooley.

Dooley registered a game and season-high, four goals and added one assist to lead Providence. Jon Meehan added three goals and one assist, while Chris Houston followed with two tallies. Five other Friars, Jon Meehan, Kyle Ojakian, Ben McNeil, Skip Dunphy, Tim Tenaglia and Kevin Kornobis scored one goal each. Ojakian handed out a game-high three assists on the day.

Wagner got a goal in the first quarter from James Servidio to tie the game 1-1, and held a 2-1 lead early in the second quarter on a goal from Bryan Gallagher which was assisted by Servidio at the 10:37 mark. The Seahawks would not score again, as the Friars went on a 12-0 scoring spree to close out the game at 14-2.

Goalkeeper John Farley registered the win in goal for Providence. He collected eight saves, while allowing both Wagner goals in 52 minutes and 53 seconds of play. Farley was replaced at the 7:07 mark of the fourth period by Paul Doran. Doran finished the game and made one save. Wagner keeper, Chris Gerlach, played all 60 minutes. He allowed all 14 Friar goals and made 20 saves on a season-high 42 shots from PC.

Providence travels to Quinnipiac for its next game on Saturday, March 24 at 1:00 p.m.
