University of Rhode Island (1-0): The University of Rhode Island field hockey team will travel to Providence College on Wednesday, September 5 for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game. The Rams currently hold a 1-0 record overall. Sophomore midfielder Desire Miller (Gauteng, South Africa) scored on a penalty corner as time ran out in the first half of the Rams' season opener against Indiana, to give Rhode Island a 1-0 victory. A year ago, the Rams beat Providence, 4-3, in overtime on their home field in Kingston, R.I. Kelly Barnowski, a 2000 graduate of URI, scored three goals, including the game winner in overtime to earn the victory.

Providence College (1-1): The Providence College field hockey team opens the 2001 home schedule with the University of Rhode Island at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5. PC competed at the Husky Invitational on Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2. The Friars earned a 4-1 win in the season opener against Albany, before losing to St. Joseph's, 5-2. Courtney Dow (Hampstead, N.H.) led the Friars with two goals against Albany, and added one goal and one assist in the loss to St. Joseph's. Dow is tied for first place among BIG EAST players in points scored with seven (3 goals, one assist). She also was named to the All-Star team at the Husky Invitational. Seven other players have contributed to the Friar offense, scoring at least one point. Through two games Providence has outshot its opponents 47-21, and holds the advantage on penalty corners, 18-11. Providence leads the all-time series with Rhode Island 15-7-2. The two teams have played every year since PC's program began in 1976, with the exception of the 1993 season. The Friars last win over the Rams was a 2-0 shutout in 1999. The Rams beat the Friars in the most recent meeting, 4-3 in overtime, on September 6, 2000.
