Men's Lacrosse Wins 10-9 Thriller Versus Vermont

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Vermont, 10-9, in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday, March 16. Juniors Jon Meehan (Peabody, Mass.) and Skip Dunphy (Manhasset, N.Y.), and freshman Dan Giuntini (Flora Park, N.Y.) scored three goals each to lead the Friars. Senior Chris Houston (Garden City, N.Y.) added one goal for PC.

Providence trailed 3-2 after the first quarter, but rallied to score four goals in the second quarter to lead 6-4 at the halftime break. Two of Meehan's three goals came in the second half. Meehan's third goal of the game was the eventual game winner, as he connected with 2:43 remaining in the game off an assist from Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) to make the score 10-8. Vermont got within one goal (10-9), with :26 remaining in the game on a goal from Phil McKnight. McKnight led all scorers with four goals and one assist for five points. Doug Moses and Mark Prior scored two goals each for Vermont, while Jeff Fauci added one goal.

The Friars held off a furious offensive rally by the Catamounts in the fourth quarter to hang onto the victory behind the defensive effort of goaltender John Farley (West Simsbury, Conn.). Farley registered a season-high 15 saves in the victory. Vermont's Michael Gabel recored nine saves in goal.

Providence (2-2) will travel to Staten Island, N.Y. on Wednesday, March 20 to take on Wagner in the Friars' first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game of the 2002 season.
