The Providence College softball team was defeated by Gardner-Webb University, 3-2, on Wednesday, March 6 at the 2002 Rebel Games Invitational.

PC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the contest, scoring their only runs of the contest. Freshman outfielder Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) went three-for-three at the plate with one of Providence's runs scored. Gardner-Webb scored single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to tie the contest off of PC starter, junior Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.), who pitched six innings and allowed four hits and one earned run. Peterson also struck out seven Bulldog batters. Gardner-Webb won the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning a pair of Providence fielding errors and a run-scoring single to leftfield. PC freshman Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched the seventh inning and took the loss.
