Softball Lose, Tie At Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Providence College softball team was defeated in game one at Fairfield University on Tuesday, April 16th and the two teams played to a 2-2 tie through five innings in the second game in a non-conference doubleheader.

In game one, the Friars (10-31-1 overall) led 3-1 through the game's first six innings. The Stags (23-22-2) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the contest at 3-3 and send it to extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning, PC scored twice to take a 5-3 lead, but in the bottom of the 10th, Fairfield scored three times to win, 6-5. PC freshmen Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and catcher Ashlee Weatherford (Woodland, Calif.) each had two hits in the loss for Providence. Junior pitcher Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched 9.2 innings and allowed 15 hits, six runs, four earned runs and she struck out 10.

In the second game, PC scored single runs in the top of the first and top of the fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Again in this game Fairfield scored the tying runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the contest and the game was called because of darkness. Providence sophomore Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) pitched five innings and allowed three hits, two runs and one earned run in the no decision.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, April 20th when they travel to the University of Connecticut for a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader that begins at 12 noon.
