PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 10-5, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action, on Saturday, April 27, in Providence, R.I. It is the first time PC has defeated the Mount since 1996, and now trail in the all-time series, 2-5. The win secured second place in the MAAC standings and in the upcoming MAAC Championship tournament, being held on May 3-4 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Friars' second-place finish in the MAAC, with a 5-2 league record, is the highest finish in the teams' seven year membership.
Senior midfielder Kyle Ojakian (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Friars with two goals and four assists. During the game, Ojakian set PC's single-season scoring record with 22-seconds remaining in the second quarter on an assist, to put the Friars up 4-1. The record was previously set by Matt Pymm in 1998 (58 points). Ojakian then set Providence's single-season assist record at the 4:10 mark of the third quarter. Ojakian held the previous record, with 39 assists, set in 2001. At the end of the day, Ojakian had recorded single-season totals of 62 points and 41 assists.
Junior Jon Meehan (Peabody, Mass.) scored three goals for the Friars and junior Skip Dunphy (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored two goals. Freshman Dan Giuntini (Flora Park, N.Y.) registered two points on one goal and one assist. Freshman Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.) were credited with one goal each. Senior Chris Houston (Garden City, N.Y.) finished the day with one assist.
For Mount St. Mary's junior Kevin Merlini (Wyncote, Pa.) scored a team-high two goals. Junior Josh Warfield (Forest Hill, Md.) and sophomore Charles Hogg (Ellicott City, Md.) each registered one goal and one assist. Freshman William Jautze (Setawket, N.Y.) rounded out the Mount St. Mary's attack with one goal.
Senior goaltender John Farley (West Simsbury, Conn.) collected nine saves for Providence and allowed just five goals in 60 minutes of action. Tom Dryer (Annapolis, Md.) recorded nine saves and allowed 10 goals in the effort for Mount St. Mary's.
Providence finishes the regular-season schedule and improves to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in MAAC action. Mount St. Mary's falls to 5-10 overall and 5-2 in the MAAC. On Friday, May 3, Providence will face Mount St. Mary's once again in the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. at 3:00 p.m. Providence will be the second seed in the tournament, and the Mount will enter the tourney as the No. 3 seed. Manhattan College, who won the regular-season MAAC title, will hold the No. 1 seed and will face No. 4 seed St. Joseph's in the first game of the tournament at 12 noon.
