PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Albany, 2-1, on Friday, September 20 in Providence, R.I. during the Friars' 2002 home opener at Hendricken Field. Seniors Lyndsey Brooks (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Kara Lukens (Pennsburg, Pa.) tallied one goal each in the first half of play to earn the victory.
Brooks started the scoring with an unassisted goal 9:02 into the game as she drove home a rebound off the Albany goalkeeper. Just 32-seconds later (9:34), Albany's Lisa Burline (Whitesboro, N.Y.) tied the game, 1-1, on an unassisted goal.
Providence decided the game with 10:43 remaining in the first half as Lukens notched the game-winner on a penalty stroke opportunity. The goal is Lukens' third of the season, and the fourth of her career.
Junior goalkeeper Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) recorded three saves for Providence in 35 minutes of action. Sophomore Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) relieved Moran in the second half and stopped one shot. Megan Akstin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) registered 17 saves in goal for Albany. Providence improves to 5-4 overall with the victory, while the Great Danes fall to 1-5.
Providence (5-4) will travel to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts to take on Boston College in BIG EAST Conference action on Wednesday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. The game marks the first BIG EAST contest of the season for the Friars, who finished the 2001 season with a 1-4 record in league play.
