PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team was upset, 1-0, by in-state rival Rhode Island on Wednesday, October 8 in Providence, R.I. URI's Courtney Wood scored the game-winning goal with 16:19 remaining in the game.
The Rams dominated the first half of play, outshooting the Friars, 6-0. With the score tied 0-0 at halftime, the Friars rallied in the second half and outshot URI, 11-10, for the game but their second-half effort fell short. URI's Wood scored on a penalty corner from 10 yards out, unassisted, with 16:19 remaining in the game.
Senior goalkeeper Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) made two saves for Providence in the loss. Danielle Dangoia made five saves in the second half to solidify the victory for the Rams. Providence falls to 7-6 overall on the season, while Rhode Island improves to 5-7. Providence (7-6) will travel to Piscataway, N.J. to take on Rutgers in BIG EAST Conference action on Friday, October 10 at 8:00 p.m. The Friars will remain in New Jersey for a non-conference tilt against Monmouth at Noon on Sunday, October 12. Providence's final home game of the season will be played on Friday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. versus big east foe Syracuse.
