OCOEE, Fla. - The Providence College softball team opened the 2004 season with a pair of victories on Sunday, March 7 at the Rebel Games in Ocoee, Fla. Providence defeated Butler, 8-5 and then posted a 2-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky in the nightcap.
In the victory versus Butler, the Friars came back from a 5-0 first inning deficit to defeat the Bulldogs, behind the strong pitching of freshman Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.). Surosky, who was making her collegiate debut, came in a relief appearance and pitched six shutout innings to earn the win. She struck out four batters and allowed four hits. Junior Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) led the Friars at the plate as she batted three-for-four with three runs and one run batted in. Senior Chrissy Iannolo (Syracuse, N.Y.) had two hits, two runs and one RBI, while sophomore Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and sophomore Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) each had two hits and one run.
The Friars continued their strong pitching in the second game as junior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched a complete game, allowing just one hit as the Friars defeated Eastern Kentucky, 2-1. Offensively, Willette belted a solo home run and junior Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) drove in the game-winning run in the sixth inning as the Friars improved to 2-0. Petersen and sophomore Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calf.) each had two hits.
Providence will return to action on Monday, March 8 as they will play Quinnipiac and Central Michigan.
