Softball Wins Two At Rebel Games

OCOEE, Fla. - The Providence College softball team posted two victories at the Rebel Games in Ocoee, Florida on Tuesday, March 9. The Friars defeated Niagara, 8-4, in nine innings and recorded a 3-2 triumph over Toledo in eight innings.

In their first victory of the day, Providence scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn an 8-4 win over the Niagara Purple Eagles. Junior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had a strong game for the Friars as she drove in the game-winning run and hit her first home run of the season. Petersen finished with three hits, three runs and two runs batted in, while freshman Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) drove in two runs. Senior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out three batters.

The Friars continued their winning ways in extra innings in the second game as they defeated the Toledo Rockets, 3-2, in eight innings. Sophomore Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) drove in junior Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) for the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead PC. The Friars trailed 2-0 going into the seventh inning, but Romero and freshman Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) each scored to tie the game at 2-2. Junior pitcher Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) struck 14 batters in eight innings and allowed just four hits to earn her second victory of the season. With the two wins, Providence improved to 5-1 on the season.

Providence will return to action on Wednesday, March 10 as they will play Sacred Heart and St. Bonaventure in Ocoee, Fla.
