PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team captured their fourth and fifth consecutive victories as it defeated Fairfield, 9-7, 2-1, on Saturday, April 10 in a non-conference double header at Fairfield, Conn. The Friars improved to 23-11-1 overall, while Fairfield fell to 14-24.
Senior pitcher Cori Van Dusen (Fairfield, Conn.) led the Friars in both games as she pitched 13-plus combined innings. In the first game, Van Dusen pitched six and one-third innings, allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out six batters. At the plate, the Friars did most of their damage in the third inning as they scored six runs on six hits. Junior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) gave the Friars a 2-0 lead with a two-run double to right center. The inning was highlighted by freshman Rachel Bartholomew (Coto de Caza, Calif.), who hit a double with the bases loaded to drive in three runs as the Friars jumped ahead to a 5-0 lead. Van Dusen added an RBI single to give PC a 6-0 cushion.
The Friars made the score, 8-0, in the fifth inning on an RBI single by junior Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.). Treveloni finished with four hits and one RBI. However, the Stags scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half. Shannon Logan capped off the inning with an RBI single. Logan was one of four Stags to record at least two hits. Megan Miller had three hits and one RBI. Providence added another run in the sixth inning to make the score, 9-4, on an RBI single by freshman Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) who finished with two hits and two RBI. The Stags rallied with three runs in the seventh inning, but it was not enough. Natalie Visone hit a two-run double to cut the lead to, 9-6. The Stags added another run to complete the scoring.
In the second game, Van Dusen pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out three batters. Fairfield took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Laura Sandonato. The Friars tied the game in the third inning as Petersen hit a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) drove in the game-winning run in the fourth inning with a double as Rachel Bartholomew scored on the play. Van Dusen was strong the rest of the way en route to her 10th victory of the season.
The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, April 13 at Dartmouth.
