Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Providence College softball team was defeated at Yale, 4-1, 5-3, on Wednesday, April 21 in a non-conference double header at New Haven, Conn.
Despite outhitting the Bulldogs, 10-5, in the first game, the Friars dropped a 4-1 decision. The Friars trailed, 2-0, in the sixth inning, but cut the lead in half as sophomore Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) doubled to right field to score classmate Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.), who had singled. Romero and sophomore Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) finished with three hits each. However, the Bulldogs added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the win. Kristy Kwiakowski doubled to left center to drive in two runs.
On the mound, PC senior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) pitched six innings and allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out five batters. Jillian Miles started the game for the Bulldogs and allowed one run on eight hits as she earned the victory. Peggy Hunt was credited with the save as she retired all three batters she faced in the seventh inning.
In the second game, the Bulldogs scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs took advantage of two errors in the inning and Meredith Parks hit a two-run double to give Yale the lead. The Friars came back in the sixth inning as they scored three runs. PC had four consecutive hits in the inning, including a bases loaded double by Romero to clear the bases and make the score, 5-3. Romero combined to bat 5-for-6 with four RBI in the double header.
Beth Pavlicek, who came in relief for Peggy Hunt, did not allow the Friars to get any closer. Hunt earned the win as she pitched four innings and allowed three runs on four hits and struck out two batters. For the Friars, freshman Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) pitched four-plus innings and allowed three earned runs on nine hits. Junior Caitlyn Sheehan (Rehoboth, Mass.) relieved Surosky and went one and one-third innings as she retired all four batters, including two strikeouts.
Providence returns to action on Thursday, April 22 with a home double header versus Brown.
