Softball Wins Double Header At Marist, 7-1, 9-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Providence College softball team captured its fifth consecutive victory by sweeping a non-conference double header at Marist, 7-1, 9-0 (five innings), on Wednesday, April 28 at Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

In game one, the Friars took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as junior Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) hit a two-run home run. Freshman Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) added an RBI double as the Friars increased their lead to 3-0. Garvin followed up her second-inning double with a home run in the fourth inning and sophomore Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) also hit a home run in the fifth inning to give the Friars a 5-0 cushion. Providence was ahead 7-0 in the seventh inning before the Red Foxes scored their lone run on an RBI single by Christine Jakobsen.

On the mound, senior Cori Van Dusen pitched all seven innings and allowed one run on seven hits and struck out three batters to earn her 14th win of the season.

In the second game, the Friar duo of junior Nicole Barthololew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and freshman Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) combined to pitch a five inning no-hitter as the Friars cruised to a 9-0 victory. Nicole Bartholomew started the game and pitched two innings and retired all six batters, including three via the strikeout. Surosky was credited with the victory as she retired nine of the 10 batters she faced and posted three strikeouts. It marked the fifth no-hitter in Providence College softball history and the third this season.

The game was scoreless for the first three innings, but the Friars erupted for six runs in the fourth inning and added three in the fifth inning to earn their 32nd win of the season. Sophomore Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) started the fourth inning with a two-run home run to give PC a 2-0 lead. Junior Kalena Petersen (Mission Miejo, Calif.) capped off the six-run inning as she hit a three-run home run. Petersen's homer was her ninth of the season as she tied Willette for the team lead. Van Dusen drove in two of PC's three runs in the fifth inning as she singled to left field.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, May 1 when they battle BIG EAST foe Boston College in Providence.
