BERKELEY, Calif. - The Providence College field hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to Pacific in the Friars' 2004 season opener in Berkeley, Calif. on Saturday, August 28. It marked the first of three non-conference games that Providence will play on its West Coast trip to California. Junior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) scored the Friars' lone goal of the afternoon off an assist from sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.). Sophomore Vianney Campos netted two of Pacific's three goals on the afternoon. Last season, Campos was honored as the NorPac Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman. Pacific jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Laura Maurer and Campos each scored a goal within the first 2:10 of the game. Lary got the Friars on the scoreboard with just under two minutes left in the first half as she connected off a pass from McGow. However, Campos answered with her second goal of the day, just 1:23 into the second half to make the final score, 3-1. Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) collected nine saves and allowed three goals in the loss. Pacific goalkeeper Kim Myers made two saves and allowed one goal in the Tigers' season opening victory. Pacific outshot Providence, 18-5, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 11-4. The Friars will face California on Sunday, August 29 in Berkeley, Calif. at 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time). Providence finishes its three-game road trip against Stanford on Tuesday, August 31 in Stanford University, Calif. (4:00 p.m. Eastern Time).
