PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team posted a 5-3, come-from-behind victory, over Rider University on Saturday, September 11. The game was played at Brown University on Warner Roof in Providence, R.I. Junior forward Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) led the Friars with two goals and one assist. The Friars improved to 2-4 overall with the win, and handed the Broncs their first loss of the season (4-1).

Rider jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and held PC scoreless in the first 35 minute session. Christina Ang netted both goals for the Broncs. Ang's first goal found the back of the cage 10:40 into action. She netted her second goal of the half with 17:42 left to play. The Broncs outshot PC, 10-6 in the first half and held the advantage on penalty corners, 5-1.

The second half was a different story for both teams, as Providence dominated from the start of play. Freshman forward Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) tallied her second goal of the season and the Friars first of the day just 1:34 into the second half. Maguire's goal was assisted by sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) and cut Rider's lead to one (2-1). Senior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) then tied the game, 2-2, on a blast from the top of the circle on a penalty corner at the 27:05 mark. Lary and McGow were credited with assists on the play.

The Friars took their first lead (3-2) with 18:07 left in the game and never looked back. Lary positioned herself at the left post and deflected a hard cross from sophomore Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.). Weinstein was credited with the assist. Lary followed with her second goal of the day to make the score 4-2 with 8:37 to play. The goal proved to be the game winner for PC and was assisted by Phillips.

Rider threatened with its third goal of the game at the 6:16 mark to make the score 4-3, but would fall short of the comeback. The Friars sealed the game with 1:47 remaining as McGow scored her second goal of the season, unassisted. McGow dribbled took the ball 40 yards on her own into the circle and fired a hard shot into the back of the cage from the right side. PC outshot Rider, 12-6 in the second half and held the advantage on penalty corners, 6-2.

For the game, the Friars outshot the Broncs, 18-16, and the two teams were even in penalty corners with seven apiece. Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) made eight saves in the win for PC. Krysta Bearish took her first loss of the season in goal for Rider and finished the game with seven saves.

Providence (2-4) will return to action on Thursday, September 16 at Harvard University. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
