PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence Head Coach Chris Burdick announced that Ron Westgate, James Courter, Peter Littell and Jason Trout will captain the 2006 Friar men's lacrosse team.
Senior goalie Ron Westgate begins his third campaign as team captain. Westgate helped guide the Friars to two regular season and one conference championship in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as well as an NCAA tournament appearance. Westgate played high school lacrosse at Sandwich High School in Massachusetts.
"Ron is a spark plug of energy," Burdick notes. "He has been an inspiration to our players in the way he prepares week in and week out, regardless of the minutes he expects to see that week. He is always ready to help the team."
James Courter was named to the MAAC Second Team as a sophomore and will serve his second season as team captain. Courter comes from Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey. As a freshman at Providence, Courter started along with seniors Ben Brown and Brain O'Rorke on the MAAC Championship team defense that was ranked fifth in the nation.
"James is the driving force behind the championship effort at Providence," Burdick said of his 6'5" defender. "He refuses to give in to individual will of players and forces each guy to step up to the championship level. In 15 years of coaching, I have never come across a more committed or more loyal young man."
Jason Trout makes the jump from Assistant Captain in 2005 to Co-Captain in 2006. Jason is coming off two injury plagued seasons with the Friars in his freshman and sophomore seasons. Jason played at the Park School in Baltimore, Maryland before coming to Providence.
"Jason has a very mature outlook on life and is a great influence on our younger players," Burdick praised. "His ability to reason and to evaluate circumstances in terms of the championship level of commitment adds a great deal of depth to our leadership group."
Peter Littell begins his first season as Captain of the Friar lacrosse program. The junior goalie comes to Providence after paying for Chris Johnson at Montclair High School in New Jersey. Peter has seen limited action over his first two seasons but is likely to replace graduated First Team all conference selection Andrew McMinn in the goal.
"The values Peter has learned at Montclair under Coach Johnson are exactly what we require of our captains," Burdick noted. "Peter is committed to promoting the championship level, of which integrity and loyalty are major components. Both characteristics were staples of his high school experience."
"These guys have a lot to live up to," Burdick added. "This program has matured under the leadership of guys like Matt Berk, John Farley, Ben Brown, and John Pynchon. It will be up to these four outstanding young men to continue to carry the legacy of our former captains as the program continues to grow."
