MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - The Providence College softball team opened the 2005 season with a double header split against College of Charleston on Tuesday, March 1. The Friars posted an 8-0 victory (six innings) in the first game, but dropped a 5-0 decision in the nightcap.

The Friars added to their lead in the third inning with three more runs, as sophomore Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) capped off the inning with a two-run double. In the sixth-inning, the Friars completed the scoring when Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) hit an RBI double to score junior Nikki Hull (Portland, Ore.). Rachel Bartholomew and Garvin finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Romero had three hits and one RBI.

In the nightcap, College of Charleston pitcher Rachael Stern held the Friars to two hits as the Cougars defeated the Friars, 5-0. Stern pitched all seven innings and struck out two batters. The Cougars scored all of their runs in the first inning as Renee Francis and Darcy Johnson each drove in two runs.

After the first inning, Providence freshman pitcher Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) allowed just two hits and no runs. Of the five runs scored by the Cougars, only one was earned.
