SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Vermont, 6-3, in non-conference action on Sunday, March 13 in South Burlington, Vermont. Senior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) tallied a hat trick and added one assist to lead the Friars.
Vermont jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on unassisted goals from Austin Humphries and Jamie Kirk. Humphries netted the first goal of the day at the 10:00 minute mark, followed by Kirk's goal at 6:51. Giuntini got the Friars on the board with 3:10 remaining in the first quarter off an assist from Jonathan Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) to make the score 2-1.
In the second quarter, the Friars scored two unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead into halftime. Senior Sean Kirwan (Drexel Hill, Pa.) connected on his second goal of the season, unassisted, with 9:32 on the clock. Giuntini put Providence ahead, 3-2, with his second goal of the afternoon off an assist from sophomore Mark Bundra (Winnetka, Ill.) at the 6:53 mark.
Providence scored the lone goal of the third quarter to take a 4-2 lead. Giuntini found the back of the cage for the eventual game winner with 11 seconds left on the clock. It marked his third goal of the game and the assist was credited to sophomore Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.).
Vermont managed to get back on the board for the final time during the fourth quarter with 13:34 remaining. Chris Lagare connected off an assist from Dan Zwirko to make the score 4-3.
The Friars closed out the game with two unanswered goals from sophomore Henry Pynchon (Ipswich, Mass.) and Hollister. Pynchon's goal (his fourth of the season) came at the 11:27 mark off an assist from Giuntini. Hollister capped off the scoring, unassisted, with 1:20 left to play in the game.
Senior goalkeeper Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the win for PC with 12 saves between the pipes. Mike Gabel made five saves for the Catamounts in goal.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, March 19 against Mount St. Mary's in the 2005 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener. The game will be played in Emmitsburg, Md. at 1:00 p.m.
