Softball Drops Double Header To Quinnipiac

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated, 4-2, 4-0, by Quinnipiac in a home-opening double header on Thursday, March 31 at Raymond Field.

The Bobcats (4-12) took the first game on the strength of two home runs. Alyssa Mansolf gave Quinnipiac the lead in the third inning with a three-run home run. Quinnipiac capped off the scoring in the fifth inning when Maria Browne hit a solo home run as the Bobcats jumped ahead, 4-0. The Friars (16-7) pulled to within 4-2 in the sixth inning as junior Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) belted a two-run home run. For Garvin, it marked her third home run of the season.

Quinnipiac pitcher Jessica Skaare held the Friars scoreless the rest of the way. She allowed three hits and struck out four batters. PC sophomore Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) pitched five innings and allowed four runs on three hits, while senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) came in relief and pitched two perfect innings.

The Bobcats continued to use the long ball in the second game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a three-run home run by Sammi Allendorfer. The three runs was all that Quinnipiac pitcher Kristin Sheriff would need as she pitched a complete game and allowed four hit while striking out two batters. For the Friars, freshman Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) pitched four innings and allowed three runs on three hits, while Nicole Bartholomew pitched three innings and gave up one run.

The Friars will open BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, April 2 at Boston College.
