CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Providence College softball team upset the fifth nationally ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers, 1-0, on Friday, March 4 in the first game of the Charleston Southern Invitational. Senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched her third consecutive shut out to lead the Friars as they improved to 4-1, while Tennessee fell to 16-3.

Nicole Bartholomew allowed just two hits and did not give up a hit until the fourth inning. She struck out four batters and maintained an earned run average of 0.00. Tennessee's Monica Abbott, who came into the game with an 11-0 record and a 0.09 ERA, pitched a strong game, but the Friars were able to score the only run they would need in the fourth inning. Sophomore Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), Nicole's younger sister, belted her first home run of the season and the Friars went on to post one of its biggest wins in school history.

Providence had three total hits as co-captains Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) and Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) each singled.

Providence will play at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4 against Furman in the team's second game of the Charleston Invitational.
