SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Providence College softball team was defeated at Syracuse, 8-0, 12-4, in a BIG EAST doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played on April 3, but it was postponed, because of rain.
In the first game, the Orange took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Courtney Mosch. The Orange took control of the game in the third inning, scoring six runs en route to the win. The Friars had four hits as Syracuse pitcher Erin Downey held Providence scoreless in five innings of action. It marked Downey's second shutout of the season.
In the second game, the Friars scored four runs in the second inning, but Syracuse came back to win, 12-4. Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas), Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.), Michele Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) each drove in one run as the Friars led, 4-0. Syracuse responded with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning to make the score, 4-3. In the third inning, the Orange took the lead for good on a two-run home run by Shawna Norris. Syracuse added three more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to complete the sweep.
Syracuse improved to 18-12 overall and 6-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars fell to 23-10 overall and 3-3 in the league. The Friars will host Holy Cross on Thursday, April 14 at Raymond Field.
