Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Central Connecticut

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Providence College softball team defeated Central Connecticut, 6-2 and 6-5, in a non-conference doubleheader played in New Britain, Conn.

The Friars jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game. Junior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Friars a 2-0 advantage. In the fourth inning, PC doubled its lead thanks to senior Kalena Petersen's two-run homer. Senior Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) drove in a run in the fourth inning to give PC the five-run lead. On the mound, senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) earned her 14th victory of the season by pitching a complete game and striking out 12 batters.

In the second game, the Friars opened the scoring in the first inning as Petersen hit her second home run of the doubleheader. Providence broke a 2-2 deadlock in the third inning when sophomore Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) hit an RBI double and eventually scored an unearned later in the inning to make the score, 4-2. The Blue Devils scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game, but the Friars bounced back in the fifth inning with two runs to regain the two-run lead. Freshman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) each drove in one run in the fifth inning to make the score, 6-4. CCSU added a run in the sixth inning, but freshman pitcher Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) held the Blue Devils scoreless the rest of the way. Lewis earned the win as she pitched three plus innings and allowed two runs, while striking out three.

The Friars are back in action on Thursday, April 21 with a home doubleheader versus Rhode Island.
