CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Providence College softball team (31-16, 5-9) split a BIG EAST doubleheader at Boston College (17-21, 5-7) on Tuesday, April 26 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Friars won the first game, 2-0, behind the strong pitching of senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), but the Eagles came back to capture the second game, 6-4.

In the first game, the Friars scored the only run they would need in the first inning on an RBI single by freshman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) that scored junior Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.), who led off the game with a single. Providence added another run in the fourth inning when junior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) belted her eighth home run of the season to make the score, 2-0.

Bartholomew held the Eagles scoreless as she earned her ninth shutout of the season and posted her 15th victory. In seven innings of action, Bartholomew allowed just four hits and struckout four batters. For the Eagles, Britney Thompson allowed two runs on six hits and posted two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Eagles scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings en route to a 6-4 victory. The Eagles struck first, scoring a run in the second and third inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Friars tied the game (2-2) in the fourth inning as Pittman and senior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) each drove in one run. However, the Eagles bounced back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to make the score, 4-2. In the fifth inning, Jenna Macchi drove in one and run, while Michelle Daly scored an unearned run to make the score, 6-2. Pittman hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-4, but the Friars could not get any closer.

Thompson pitched five-plus innings for the Eagles as she allowed four runs on five hits. Daly came in relief and retired all four batters she faced to earn the save. For the Friars, sophomore Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) pitched two-plus innings and allowed two runs on four hits and struckout three batters. Bartholomew came in the third inning and allowed four runs on six hits and struckout five batters in three-plus innings of action.

The Friars will play at Brown University in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 28.
