QUEENS, N.Y. - The Providence College softball team was defeated, 3-2 and 5-3, at St. John's on Sunday, May 1 in a BIG EAST doubleheader played at Red Storm Field in Queens, N.Y. With the two losses the Friars end the season with a 33-20 overall record and a 5-13 mark in league action. St. John's improved to 20-30 overall and 6-10 in the BIG EAST.

The Friars' comeback attempt in the first game fell short as they scored two runs in the seventh innings, but could not get the equalizer. Senior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) hit an RBI single, while freshman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch to make the score, 3-2. However, St. John's pitcher Lisa Geer, who came in relief in the seventh inning for the starter Meghan Allman, retired the next three batters to earn the save. Allman pitched six innings and allowed two runs on four hits. For the Friars, senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) started the game for PC and pitched one-plus innings. Sophomore Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) allowed just two hits and no runs in four-plus innings of relief action.

The Red Storm scored two unearned runs in the first inning as Allina Sainz and Jo Sherlock each drove in one run. In the second inning, St. John's took a 3-0 lead on an RBI single by Danielle Estrada.

In the second game, Providence jumped out a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by senior Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas). PC kept its lead until the fifth inning, but the Red Storm scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. After Sainz's two-run home run, Estrada hit a bases clearing double that scored three runs.

In the sixth inning, the Friars pulled to within, 5-2, when junior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) hit a solo home run. It marked Willette's ninth home run of the season, which is tied for the team lead. Providence added another run in the seventh inning, but it was not enough. Allman earned the save as she pitched one inning, while Geer was credited with the win, allowing three runs on three hits in six innings of action.

For Providence, Surosky started the game and pitched four-plus innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out four batters.
