Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced its 2005 MAAC All-Academic Team selections for men's lacrosse at the league's annual championship banquet on Thursday, May 5 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Senior midfielder Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.) was selected to the All-Academic Team for the fourth-consecutive season.

Rotella serves as the Friars' primary face-off man and is scheduled to graduate from Providence in May with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. A two-time team captain for the Friars, Rotella has earned numerous accolades during his career. In 2003, he represented Providence at the NCAA Leadership Conference. Last year, Rotella was named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-Academic District 1 At-Large First Team and currently serves as the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

Rotella earned Most Valuable Player recognition at the conclusion of the 2004 MAAC Championship game. This season he leads the team in groundballs, with a single-season career-high of 80. He also owns a 0.600 winning percentage at the face-off "X" with victories in 132-of-220 face-off opportunities. Rotella is three face-off victories shy of 500 for his career (497-882, 0.563). He also is chasing the Providence school record for career groundballs (256), held by current Friar assistant coach and 1998 PC graduate Jim Mascia.

The Friars open play in the 2005 MAAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed on Friday, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. PC's semifinal round opponent is fourth seeded Marist. The winner will advance to the MAAC Championship game on Sunday, May 8 at Noon to face the winner of the other semifinal game between No. 2 Mount St. Mary's and No. 3 Manhattan. The winner of the MAAC Championship title will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
