POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The top-seeded Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to fourth-seeded Marist, 9-5, in the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament at Leonidoff Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Friday, May 6. Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) led the Friars with two goals, while junior Tom Kelly (Henniker, N.H.) added one goal and two assists. Providence concludes its season with an 8-8 overall record, Marist improves to 7-7 overall.
Marist scored the lone goal of the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead as Tim Iuculano scored, unassisted, at the 6:46 mark. The Red Foxes went on to score four-consecutive goals to open the second quarter to take a 5-0 advantage. Mike McGuire got things going just 54-seconds into the quarter, unassisted. Patrick Van Horne followed with a goal at the 13:22 mark off an assist from Keith Detelj. Iuculano netted his second goal of the game for a 4-0 Red Foxes lead, unassisted, at 8:30. Detelj scored Marist's final goal of the span with 3:58 remaining in the quarter, unassisted.
Providence finally got on the board with 2:42 on the clock in the second quarter as Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) netted an unassisted goal for the Friars to get within 5-1. Ryan tallied his second goal of the night with one-second left on the clock, assisted by Kelly. Ryan's last-second goal cut the deficit to three goals at the half (5-2).
In the third quarter, Kelly netted an unassisted goal for PC to make the score, 5-3. Marist answered with a goal of its on at the 2:56 mark to regain the three-goal lead (6-3). Van Horne was credited with the goal off an assist from Billy Duerr.
In the fourth quarter, Providence scored two-straight goals to get within one (6-5). Senior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) scored at 11:37 off a pass from Kelly to make the score 6-4. Freshman R.J. Lamontagne (Pittsford, N.Y.) followed within an unassisted tally at the 10:02 mark. The Red Foxes answered back with goals from Detelj at 7:37 and Andrew Walsh at 5:28. Detelj netted another goal at 1:28 to give Marist a 9-5 lead.
Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 14 saves between the pipes for Providence in his last collegiate game. Stephen Gravino made eight saves in the victory for Marist.
Senior Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.) registered his 500th career face-off victory in the game for PC. He finished the night 11-16 from the face-off "X" in his final game and finishes with 508 career wins.
