Field Hockey Upends Vermont, 8-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team earned its first victory at the newly completed Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. on Saturday, September 3. PC defeated Vermont, 8-1. Junior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) led all scorers with five points on two goals and one assist. Sophomore Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) also connected on two goals in the Friar effort.

The Catamounts connected on their only goal of afternoon off of a penalty corner with 21:25 remaining in the second half. Nikki Desch recorded the goal, while Merrie-Beth Maynard was credited with the assist.

Four other Friars joined McGow and Maguire in the scoring column. Junior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.), senior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.), freshman Ali Kornfeld (Kingston, Pa.) and sophomore Amanda Paquin (Tiverton, R.I.) each recorded goals. Sophomore Kiley Morgart (Mountaintop, Pa.) registered one assist.

The Friars' eight goals in the game marked the most scored by PC in a single contest since the 1991 season. That year, Providence defeated Georgetown, 8-0.

Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) earned her first collegiate victory in the cage with two saves in 50:52 minutes of action. She was replaced by sophomore Katherine Claeys (Lake Forest, Ill.) with 19:08 remaining in the game. Claeys finished the afternoon with four saves in her collegiate debut. Erin Hickey took the loss for Vermont with five saves.

Providence (1-1) will return to action on Sunday, September 4 against non-conference foe Northeastern. The Friars and Huskies meet for a 1:00 p.m. game at PC's Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
