KINGSTON, R.I. - The 13th-ranked Providence College field hockey team defeated in-state rival, Rhode Island, 3-0, on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 in Kingston, R.I. The Friar defense held the Rams to just six shots in the game en route to a shutout.

Providence got on the board at 8:33 in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) took a pass from sophomore Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) and placed a hard shot to the corner of the net. The Friars scored again before the half at 31:19, taking a 2-0 lead, as junior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) redirected a cross from senior Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) into the net.

The Friars went ahead 3-0 at the 48:20 mark in the second half as McGow assisted a goal by freshman Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine).

Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) secured her seventh shutout of the season, making one save on the day. M.J. Britt made fifteen saves in net for Rhode Island. Providence outshot Rhode Island, 22-6, and held an 18-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Friars also held a 10-2 edge in penalty corners.

Providence College (16-3, 4-1 BIG EAST) returns to action on Saturday, October 28 against BIG EAST foe Connecticut. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. at 1:00 p.m.
