EVANSTON, Ill. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to No. 5 Iowa, 3-1, on Saturday, October 6 at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. Iowa improves to 11-2 overall, while Providence falls t 8-5 on the year.
Iowa took a 1-0 lead 29:23 into the game as Kadi Sickel tipped in an initial shot taken by Lauren Pfeiffer during a penalty corner.
In the second half, the Hawkeyes went up 2-0 as Jess Werley knocked home a rebound that deflected off the PC goalkeeper just 1:49 into the action. Junior Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) scored the lone Friar goal off an assist from senior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) at 39:06 to make the score 2-1.
The Hawkeyes slowed the Friars' second-half momentum as Pfeiffer connected on a direct shot off a penalty corner at the 46:24 mark. Caroline Blaum and Roz Ellis were credited with assists on the play.
Iowa outshot Providence 17-13, including a 12-8 edge in shots on goal. Iowa also held the advantage in penalty corners, 12-6. All six of PC's penalty corners were awarded in the second half of play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) registered nine saves in the loss. Lissa Munley recorded seven saves for Iowa.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 7 against Northwestern. The game will be played at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
