Softball Splits Doubleheader At St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader versus St. John's Sunday afternoon in Queens, N.Y. The Friars belted 24 hits in the first game en route to a 15-10 win in eight innings, however St. John's won the second game, 5-4.

In the first game, the Friars (11-13, 2-6 BIG EAST) rallied from 6-0, and 9-2 deficits to post a 15-10 victory in eight innings. The Red Storm (7-24, 2-6 BIG EAST) scored three times in the first two innings as Spring Montgomery and Danielle Estrada each hit a two-run single in the first and second inning, respectively. The Friars began their comeback in the fourth inning when sophomore Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit her first home run of the season to make the score, 6-1. Freshman Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) belted her second home run this season to cut the lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning.

The Red Storm responded in the bottom half of the fifth inning, scoring three more runs to increase the lead to 9-2. In the sixth inning, the Friars scored five runs to make the score 9-7. Rossi and senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) each had RBI singles, while junior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) drove in two more runs with a double. After St. John's scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score, 10-7, PC tied the game in the seventh as three Friars crossed the plate. The first three Friars reached base as freshman Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.), senior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) and Rossi all singled. With one out, Garcia drove in Becker and Ross to make the score, 10-9. Rossi eventually came around to score on an RBI single by Bartholomew.

PC was able to get out of the bottom of seventh inning unscathed despite a two-out double by Roxann Struble. However, in the eighth inning, PC put the game away, scoring five runs with two outs to make the score 15-10. After Rossi reached base with her fourth hit of the game, freshman Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) smacked a two-run home run to give the Friars their first lead (12-10). It marked Bertolette's fourth home run of the season. After Garcia drove in another run, Pittman hit her second home run of the season, a two-run blast, to complete the scoring. In all, the Friars had 24 hits, including four each by Rossi and Garcia. Pittman, Bartholomew and Bertolette had three hits each. Senior pitcher Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) earned the win as the pitched the last four innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out six batters.

In the second game, Struble singled with two outs in the sixth inning to drive in the winning run as the Red Storm posted a 5-4 win. St. John's jumped out to a 4-0 third inning lead, scoring three times in the first inning and once in the third. The Friars tied the game in the fourth inning with four runs, highlighted by a two-run single by Pittman.

Lisa Geer pitched all seven innings for St. John's as she allowed four earned runs on six hits and struck out nine batters. For the Friars, sophomore Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.), who came in relief of Surosky, allowed one earned on five hits in over five innings of action.

The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, April 4 at 2:30 p.m. with a non-conference doubleheader versus Dartmouth at PC's Raymond Field.
