PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Rutgers Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST doubleheader at Raymond Field. The Friars posted a 5-2 win in the first game and captured the second contest, 4-1.
PC (20-15, 6-8 BIG EAST) fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but rallied to post a 5-2 win in the first game. Mallory Miller led off the second inning with a home run, her seventh of the season, as the Rutgers (17-24, 6-6 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 1-0 lead. However, in the third inning senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) blasted a two-run home run to center field to give the Friars the lead for good. It marked Bartholomew's team-leading ninth home run of the season. The Friars added two more runs in the fourth inning to make the score, 4-1. Freshman Jenna Garcia's (Morro Bay, Calif.) ground out drove in sophomore Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.), while freshman Kate Revens (Warwick, R.I.) hit a single to score classmate Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.). The lead increased to 5-1 in the fifth inning as the Friars loaded the bases before freshman Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to score senior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.). The Scarlet Knights cut the lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning when Kim Hodges hit a single to drive in Sarah Kalka who led off the inning with a hit.
On the pitching circle, senior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) earned her 10th win of the season as she pitched a complete game, allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out eight batters. Rutgers' Nicole Lindley started and went four and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on five hits and striking out two batters. Nicole Freeman pitched the rest of the way and did not allow a hit.
Revens, Rossi and Bartholomew each had two hits for the Friars. Bartholomew's double in the first inning marked her 200th career hit at Providence College. She now has 201 career hits, three short of tying a school record.
The Friars continued their strong pitching and timely hitting in the second game as they posted a 4-1 triumph. Sophomore Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) improved to 6-1 as she pitched a complete game, allowed one run (unearned) on eight hits and struck out two batters.
The Friars took a 2-0 first inning lead on a two-out single by sophomore Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.). The Scarlet Knights cut the lead to 2-1 in the third inning when Kalka scored on a error. However, in the bottom half of the third inning, the Friars regained their two-run lead as Sheehy drove in another run with two outs to make the score, 3-1. Sheehy started a two-out rally in the sixth inning when she hit a single. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single by Ross. Sheehy finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Ross and Revens also had two hits.
The Scarlet Knights threatened to score in the seventh inning as they had runners on first and second with none out, but Revens thwarted their chances. Miller hit a hard ground ball down the third base line, but Revens made a diving stop and forced a runner out at third base. Hodges then hit another hard grounder to Revens, who was able to tag third base and throw Hodges out at first for a game-ending double play.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, April 22 with a home BIG EAST doubleheader versus Villanova beginning at noon.
