The Friars earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament after winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men's Lacrosse Championship, held in Emmitsburg, Md. on May 4-6. PC entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and defeated No. 1 seed Siena, 9-7, in the semifinals. The Friars went on to defeat No. 3 seed St. Joseph's, 9-4, in the championship game.

It marks the second-straight MAAC Tournament title for Providence and third overall since joining the league in 1996. PC won its first MAAC Tournament title in 2004. Additionally, the Friars will be making their third appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history (2004, 2006 and 2007).

Providence and Duke will meet for the first time in the history of the two men's lacrosse programs. The Friars are winless in NCAA Tournament action, having lost to Johns Hopkins in 2004 and Hofstra in 2006.
