CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The 17th ranked Providence College field hockey team took on the 20th ranked Boston University Terriers on Tuesday, August 28 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. Boston University edged the Friars, 2-1, after recording the game winning goal with 3:05 remaining in regulation.
In the first half, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie (0-0). Providence did not register a shot in the opening 35 minutes of play, and BU was held to three shot attempts, only one of which was on goal.
The Friars opened the second half with two penalty corners and two and their first two shots of the game. PC managed to fire one of the shots on goal, but it was saved by BU goalkeeper Kim Kastuk.
BU took a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute as Pam Spuehler scored off a feed from Suus Dekker. It marked Spuehler's third goal of the season.
The Friars tied the game, 1-1, at the 58:19 mark of the second half as sophomore Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) netted her first goal of the season off a feed from senior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.). Poulin's goal came off a penalty corner.
Boston University regained the lead (2-1) as Gabby Hajjar posted her second goal of the season off an assist from Spuehler. Hajjar's came in the 67th minute and proved to be the game winner for BU. The Terriers improve to 2-0 on the season, while PC drops to 0-2 overall. Each of PC's two losses on the season have been determined by a single goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded two saves for PC in the loss. Kastuk also made two saves for BU for the win.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, September 1 against non-conference foe Yale at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played in New Haven, Conn.
